2 How the hell do I use this
Background
Suppose you are doing a math course. The course typically looks like this:
- You get taught the concepts if necessary
- You get taught how to solve a question
- You then have to do a bunch of questions to practice. You would get equal but large amounts of each type of question from easy to hard
- When test is about to come you do a bunch of past exam papers
- You do the test
The issue with step 3 is that even though you are repeatedly practising questions, you won't necessarily get better. This is because:
- You would waste too much time on the easy ones.
- You don't get enough time on the hard ones.
- You can't track what ones you are good at and how long you take to complete them. This is especially important for courses where one minute in a test is equivalent to one mark.
- You can forget how to do questions.
- You have to spend a lot of time solving all of the above efficiencies.
This app acts as the step 3, combining generative AI and spaced repetition, allowing you to practice essentially infinite amount of questions while taking advantage of spaced repetition.
So how should I be using it?
As mentioned previously, this app acts as the practising stage, so you should probably have some familiarity with your material before you begin to use it, but start as early as you can once you have enough knowledge. Over an extended period of time, perhaps over your semester, you will quickly extend the period of memorisation you have with doing the the question, while also be able to track other metrics like marks and time spent, at overall less time spent studying. This gained efficiency could even allow you more time to pre learn content and stay ahead of the course.
If you are using this app trying to cram for an exam in a few days then you are a bit too late. You can of course still modify the app parameters(turning up retention and enabling short term scheduling for example) so that cards are scheduled much shorter, but again remember that this isn't the use case.
